PARENTS’
COALITION “REP” JOB DESCRIPTION
Role & Purpose of Reps
As a representative of the Parents’ Coalition of Bay
Area High Schools, your main purpose is to promote
the events and resources offered by the Coalition
to your school Parents’ Association.
Your role serves as a link between the school(s) your
child or children attend, and the Parents’ Coalition.
In addition to the fellow parents at your school,
school administration such as the counselor, or Parents’
Association Board may contact you for information.
It is additionally effective if a Rep leads and/or
supports a working committee (eg. Forums/Events, Issues
& Choices, Publications, Communications/Publicity,
Rep Coordination), as this increases your knowledge
and experience with the Coalition.
Two or three parents represent each school, and each
parent usually commits to two years, often with a
second year Rep helping a first year Rep. This aids
in a smooth transition as Parent Reps move on.
Description of Reps’ Activities (can be shared amongst
Reps at your school)
• Attend Coalition Forums during the school year and
share Parents’ Association (PA) and school resource
information with the Coalition as requested.
• As a liaison between your school and the Coalition,
attend monthly PA meetings to publicize Coalition
activities and resources.
• Coordinate the inclusion of the quarterly PARENTEEN
newsletter and monthly Coalition Forum information
in your school mailings, so that the parent body is
informed about Coalition events and forums.
• Recruit parents from your school’s volunteer list
who express interest in the Coalition and help them
find a way to participate.
• Respond to calls from parents and school staff who
wish to use Coalition resources or know more about
the Coalition and its events.
• Participate in additional Coalition support according
to interest and availability.
• Train your successor by maintaining and sharing
relevant documentation such as Yearly Coalition Forum
Calendar, Council Planning meetings, Rep and Committee
names and numbers, Coalition Brochure, Resource list,
etc.
